Wits Poll: Student majority say yes

The results from the Wits student poll show that the majority of students want the university to resume its academic programme on Monday.

The interim results from yesterday’s poll run by Wits University indicate that 77% of the total respondents  want the academic programme to resume on Monday, October 3.
The poll, conducted via SMS for students and email for staff, asked whether Wits should open “subject to appropriate security protocols being in place”.

According to a statement released by the university the interim results as released by auditors SizweNtsulubaGobodo as follows:

Total responses: 21 730

Yes: 16 739 (77%)

No: 4 991 (23%)

Some students who participated in the poll, say instead of returning to campus, the time can be used  more productively.

First year BSc computational and applied maths student, Refilwe Bendly, said the poll itself was a waste of time and if university does open next week, “the protests have gone to waste if students return [on Monday]  and pretend like nothing happened over the past two weeks”, she said.

The university said in its statement that “the results of the poll as well as feedback from parents, alumni and other stakeholders will inform management’s decision-making,” about whether to resume classes on Monday.

The results from the staff poll are yet to be released after undergoing verification.

The Wits SRC could not be reached for comment.
